YouTube Premium Lite pricing: What should you compare?

The Korean-language official Lite information page accessed on October 11, 2026 showed the monthly fees below. The Lite price of ₩8,500 was accompanied by a note that VAT is included, and the membership comparison section on the same page showed Premium at ₩14,900. These are not prices confirmed by clicking the sign-up button and completing checkout.

The official announcement at the time of its launch in Korea, on January 30, 2026, also listed the same two prices for web and Android. However, the fact that the past announcement matches the current listed prices does not guarantee that prices will remain unchanged or that all accounts will be charged the same amount. Prices in other countries converted to won should also be distinguished from prices for signing up in Korea.

Lite vs. Premium: Compare background playback and downloads too

It would be incomplete to describe current Lite as a plan that simply reduces video ads. It also supports background playback and offline downloads for eligible videos. The difference lies not only in whether a feature is available, but also in which content it applies to.

Premium does not remove sponsorship messages that creators include directly in their videos. Official help explains that ads or promotions may remain in creator branding and promotions, as well as in certain separate content. Also, do not assume that Premium background playback is available in the Shorts player.

Exceptions to check even if you don’t listen to music: background music in vlogs

Music content does not mean only official music videos. Lite help also gives examples such as cover and dance videos containing content from music partners, and vlogs with popular songs playing in the background. Videos in these categories may be excluded from Lite’s ad-free viewing, background playback, and offline benefits.

So, “I don’t use a music app” and “Lite benefits apply to every video I watch” are not the same conclusion. It is useful to check separately whether the content you watch most is music-focused, whether you watch a lot of Shorts, and what restrictions apply to videos you want to listen to with the screen off. This does not mean that all vlogs or all videos with background music are excluded across the board.

Three questions to apply to your viewing habits

1. Are you mainly watching videos? If your main goal is watching long-form non-music videos, first check which content is eligible for Lite.
2. Do you also need music features? Lite alone won’t meet your needs if you want ad-free listening, background playback, and offline features in YouTube Music.
3. Do you already use a separate music service? Determine whether you’ll keep the service or whether it’s a cost you could actually eliminate by switching to Premium. Don’t automatically count it as ₩0 just because you’re already paying for it.

How to determine whether it’s cheaper: don’t compare only the Lite fee

The following is Dassa-go’s method for comparing costs. Use the same period and currency, and don’t mix free trial periods with periods charged at the regular price. List amounts already paid, amounts to be newly paid, and commitments that cannot be canceled separately.

Assuming you can replace your music service with Premium and all other conditions are the same, the difference between the two listed prices is ₩6,400 per month (14,900−8,500). You can compare costs by checking whether the additional music fee you’d pay with Lite exceeds that difference. This calculation uses the prices listed above and does not guarantee the price or savings for any particular music service.

Dassago calculation. Separate music fees of KRW 5,000, 6,400 and 7,000 are hypothetical, not actual prices of a named service. Twelve-month totals equal the monthly sum × 12, not an annual prepaid offer. They assume unchanged monthly rates, no trial and no extra fees; future charges are not guaranteed.

If switching to Premium actually removes a KRW 7,000 monthly music bill, Premium requires KRW 7,200 less cash over 12 months. If you keep paying for music with both options, Lite requires KRW 76,800 less over 12 months. Check separately that the required music and video features are covered.

With the same period and extra-fee conditions, Premium costs less only when the music cost under Lite minus the music cost retained under Premium exceeds KRW 6,400/month. At exactly KRW 6,400 they tie. If music costs are equal under both options, the monthly difference remains KRW 6,400.

Separate past non-refundable payments from future cash outlays. Include music charges for any overlap or remaining payment obligation after cancellation. Do not deduct an unverified refund. Add only actual fees and do not add included tax again.

Reuse the country-and-period comparison with South Korea and 12 months to reproduce the base fees. Account for retained music separately under each option; the final-payment and monthly-equivalent calculator can check each option’s actual total for the period.

Where to check discounts, free trials, plan changes, and cancellations

The official screen we checked showed a one-month free trial offer for the account used to access it, but we do not present this as a discount available to everyone. Check your account’s previous usage history and the offer terms to determine whether you qualify for a free trial or promotion. When comparing long-term costs, consider not only the initially displayed amount but also the billing terms after the trial.

2. Payment details: Record the first charge, subsequent price, currency, and billing entity for Lite and Premium separately.
3. Renewal and changes: Check your current plan, next billing date, and when a change takes effect in the paid membership management screen. Do not assume that the difference will be refunded immediately when you change plans.
4. Cancellation: Use the cancellation process that matches your billing entity, then check the membership screen to confirm the cancellation status and end date of access. Cancellation and refund approval are separate matters.

Premium’s separate cancellation help page says that if you are billed through Apple or Google Play, you should check the relevant billing channel. Why am I seeing ads with Lite?

First check whether the content falls under one of the stated exceptions, such as music, Shorts, or search and browsing. Is Lite a discounted version of Premium?

It is a separate plan with a different set of features. Presenting the difference between the two displayed prices as a discount rate for the same product would leave out whether music is included and which content is excluded. It is more accurate to compare the features you need alongside the actual total cost.

Will I automatically get a refund for the unused portion if I cancel?

Cancellation and refunds should be treated separately. Check the billing entity, membership terms, and end date of access; refunds are subject to the decision made under the applicable official process.
